North Shore Meals on Wheels is heavily reliant on Volunteers. We have only one part-time staff to coordinate the client requests, the delivery of meals and the organization of volunteers. We deliver meals Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Volunteer positions are always available and represent varying levels of commitment.
Volunteers are not required to prepare food. We contract a local caterer to prepare our food. Kitchen volunteers are responsible for apportioning and re-heating the meals. This volunteer position requires a once weekly commitment of approximately 2 ½ hours between the hours of 10:00 and 11:30 a.m.
Food Pick up Volunteers
Two volunteers are required three times per week for this position. The driver picks up the food from the caterer and delivers it to one of two kitchens and then returns the containers after the meals are apportioned. You must have a valid driver’s license. This volunteer position requires a once weekly commitment of approximately 1 hour. Food is picked up at 10:00 a.m. and containers must be returned after 11:30 a.m.
Food Delivery Volunteers
Delivery volunteers are responsible for picking up meals from one of our two kitchens and delivering them to the homes of our clients. You must have a valid driver’s license. This volunteer position requires a once weekly commitment of approximately 2 hours between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
If you are unable to commit to a regular position you may wish to help out as needed. Our spare drivers list is used when regular drivers are not available due to illness or holidays. You must have a valid driver’s license.
New volunteers are gladly welcomed even for a seasonal period. Several of our volunteers travel extensively so we are always looking for additional assistance.
Volunteering for Meals on Wheels is a very rewarding experience. Clients are happy to see you and look forward to receiving their hot, delicious meal. You may be the only one they see that day so it is important to spend some time with them to see how they are getting along. Many quality friendships develop during these deliveries.
A criminal record check is necessary for all volunteer positions.
